How To Achieve Fuller, Thicker, Healthier Hair

Thick, full, healthy, shiny hair is everywhere we look, from Instagram to TikTok, and we can’t help but admire it. At SILKE London, we understand the allure—gorgeous hair is truly captivating! But the big question is: how can you naturally achieve fuller hair?

Can You Really Get Fuller Hair Naturally?

First and foremost, it’s important to note that you can't change the hair follicles you're born with. Essentially, you get what you’re given in terms of hair thickness. The only way to add more hair follicles is through a hair transplant. While that may be an option for some, there are plenty of natural ways to boost your hair’s volume that are much more affordable and less invasive!

The secret to achieving the thickest, fullest hair lies in reducing hair breakage and hair loss. While this may sound simple, it's not always easy, especially since hair thinning is common and can affect both men and women.

In 2024, over 15.4 million people in the UK experienced hair loss—6.5 million men and 8 million women. Although hair loss is often associated with men due to hereditary factors, women also experience thinning hair due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, and menopause. In fact, studies show that less than half of women reach the age of 80 with a full head of hair. Factors like ageing, stress, illness, and poor nutrition also contribute to hair thinning and loss, and these can fluctuate throughout different stages of life. Even if you're not experiencing these issues now, it's possible you may in the future.

Why Does Hair Shedding Happen?

To understand how to combat hair thinning, it’s important to understand the process of hair shedding. Maria Sotiriou, co-founder of SILKE London and an experienced hair expert and stylist with over 37 years in the industry, explains why shedding occurs and how you can address it.

Maria shares: “Hair shedding is one part of the natural hair growth cycle. When this cycle is disrupted, you may notice a difference in the health and appearance of your hair. The most obvious sign is visible hair thinning or shedding.

Shedding occurs when hair comes out during washing, brushing, or touching. The most common causes of shedding are stress and nutrient deficiencies, both of which are connected. For example, iron deficiency is easily detected with a simple blood test and can often be resolved by increasing protein intake. While eliminating stress is more challenging, it’s crucial for both your hair and overall health. If stress is causing your hair to shed, it’s a sign that you need to take steps to manage it.”

Aside from stress, there are other factors that can contribute to hair shedding, including hormonal shifts during pregnancy, menopause, and grief. Fortunately, this type of hair loss is often temporary, and hair growth typically resumes as your hormones return to their normal state. This is especially common for new mothers, who may experience hair loss around the face and crown.

Caring for Your Hair During Shedding

During periods of shedding, it’s essential to take extra care of your hair, scalp, and any new growth. One major cause of unnecessary breakage is heat damage from styling tools. Instead of relying on heat, consider switching to a Heatless Curler Kit, which allows you to achieve the look you love without the damage.

Another culprit of breakage is friction during sleep. The abrasive fabric of your pillowcase can cause hair to lose moisture and become brittle. A 100% Silk Hair Wrap can protect your hair while you sleep, minimizing breakage and preserving the natural oils produced by your scalp. Since we spend about a third of our lives in bed, it’s worth investing in a silk hair wrap to make the most of this time for your hair.

The Truth Behind Viral Hair Hacks

Alongside the desire for thick, shiny hair, we’ve also seen a rise in viral beauty hacks and ingredients, especially on platforms like TikTok. But do they really work?

Maria shares her thoughts on viral trends: “I’m open to certain viral trends, like the use of rosemary oil for hair. Organic oils can do wonders for your hair, and rosemary oil is no exception. The great thing about these natural oils is that they are often affordable, easily accessible, and, when used correctly, can promote hair growth and strength. However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s hair is different. What works for one person may not work for you, so it’s crucial to understand your own hair type before jumping into any new trends.”

When trying viral hair treatments or new ingredients, Maria advises doing your research first. Some products may not be suitable for your hair and could cause damage if used incorrectly.

Easy Ways to Boost Volume and Thickness

Aside from viral hacks, there are more tried-and-tested methods to enhance your hair’s appearance and volume. According to Maria, one of the most effective ways to create the illusion of thicker hair is through a strategic haircut and colour choice.

Maria recommends:

“A good haircut can do wonders for adding body and volume to your hair. While this may seem like a simple solution, it’s often overlooked. A haircut with the right balance of weight and layers can make styling much easier, and you won’t have to rely solely on products. For example, layers should be concentrated around the crown of your head, while avoiding layers at the base of your style. A diagonal parting, rather than a center part, can also help create the appearance of volume. Using rollers to set your hair can add fullness, and allowing your hair to cool in the styled position will further enhance the effect.”

When it comes to colour, Maria suggests adding dimension to thinner areas of your hair. Soft highlights, such as baby-lights, can make thin spots less noticeable by reflecting light and creating the illusion of more volume.

To further boost volume, use volumising products. A volumising shampoo and conditioner followed by a volumising mousse applied to damp hair can help lift and enhance thickness. There are many amazing products available that can instantly increase the appearance of fullness, so investing in these can make a noticeable difference.

Protecting Your Hair from Breakage

Finally, taking extra care with how you handle your hair is key to maintaining its health and thickness. Avoid using hair ties with metal clasps, as they can cause breakage. Instead, opt for 100% silk hair ties that minimise snapping, kinks, and breakage. With silk hair ties, you can comfortably style your hair without compromising its integrity.
