Ouai's New Air Dry Foam Makes My Curly Lob Look Like Instagram Hair

Obviously, one of the coolest hair-care brands on Instagram would make an air-dry product suited for the coolest haircut on Instagram. The brand-new Ouai Air Dry Foam just launched today, but for the past two weeks it's been the secret to my touchably soft, tousled lob. It lets my curly hairair-dry to look like Lucy Hale's, after some finessing from hairstylist Kristen Ess. All I have to do is rake two pumps of the foam through my towel-dried lob. No heat tools needed.

As simple as this may sound, the journey to this Instagram-hair perfection has been a trying one. Last month marked the one-year anniversary of cutting off most of my hair. In one salon visit, my hair went from grazing my butt to sweeping the tops of my shoulders. Because it's curly and unpredictable, I've spent the last year completely relearning how to style my new lob. The curl cocktail I spent nearly eight years perfecting no longer suited my shorter look. Layering up on a leave-in, oil, and cream didn't give my ringlets definition and nourishment like it used to. Instead, the trio weighed them down. Enter the Air Dry Foam.

I never thought a foam would be the answer to my curl woes because I believed I needed something substantial. Plus, I have a general distaste for mousse, which I grouped with foams, because they make my hair crispy no matter which one or how much I used. But Ouai has finally convinced me that a foam was what my curls were searching for. The Air Dry Foam dispenses like your favorite face cleanser, but it's even lighter. In fact, the formula is so lightweight that it makes a mousse feel heavy. This texture is key to letting my ringlets spring up to their truest potential. With my old regimen, I nearly forgot how curly my hair is; this foam helped my hair remember what it's capable of. The foam contains kale extract which, believe it or not, helps control your curls. It won't make your hair smell like kale, though. Instead, it's spiked with Ouai's signature floral fragrance.

Depending on when you shower, you can approach the application of the Air Dry Foam in two ways. If I wash my hair in the morning, I like to scrunch some of the foam onto my hair just before it's started to dry on its own. Reason being, I'm convinced slightly dried hair helps the foam grip onto it better. If I shower at night, I disperse the two pumps of foam throughout my curls before slipping on a Silke Hair Wrap, which is made with 100 percent silk and prevents my curls from getting crushed and frizzy while I sleep.

The foam does come with some caveats, though. If my hair were in its previous Alanis Morisette state, the Air Dry Foam probably wouldn't have done anything. I'd have to use half the bottle for the feather-like formula to evenly coat all my hair. Also, my hair may look thick, but its individual strands are fine. If they were denser, I don't think the foam would have the same effect. However, if you have fine hair — straight, wavy, or curly — the foam is sure to amplify its texture.
