6 Expert Tips for Hair Loss due to Menopause

We’d all love our hair to stay as thick and glossy as it is in our 20s, but the harsh reality is that as we age, our hair changes too...

“About half of all women will have some element of hair loss by the age of 50, and by the age of 60, approximately 80 percent of women will experience some hair loss,” says Glynis Ablon, MD.

A study by L'Oreal found that 1 in 3 women in the UK claim to experience hair loss. Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors such as stress and diet, but if it isn’t any of those things it may be hormonal, which is inherently linked to the menopause.

Menopausal hair loss is a symptom that more than 50% of women experience, so our co-founder, Maria Sotiriou, has put together her expert tips on how to combat it:

Allow your hair to thrive

As growth slows, hair weakens and is more prone to breakage during menopause, Maria’s top tip is to wear a SILKE Hair Wrap overnight. It provides the best possible environment for hair to strengthen and thrive, by allowing hair to absorb as much natural moisture and keep it as hydrated as possible.

Know your cut

In terms of cut, Maria recommends lengthening layers, so hair looks more full from root to tip. Therefore, a long-layered bob is best.

Protective styles with kind accessories

As hair is weaker during menopause, it’s important to nurture new hair that’s coming through. Maria recommends sticking to SILKE Hair Ties for updos, which don’t put as much pressure on specific points of the hair, which causes breakage. Protective styles, such as a loose plait, secured with a SILKE Hair Tie, are particularly good option for styling during menopause.

Eat and cleanse well

While a protein-rich diet can do wonders for strengthening hair, choosing hair care enriched with keratin and protein, as well as salon grade shampoos is particularly important as well. These shampoos not only focus on removing dirt/grease from the hair, but also replenish moisture and nutrients, making sure not to strip hair and leave it more susceptible to breakage.

Heatless tools FTW

Maria recommends avoiding heat styling where possible, opting for heatless tools such as the SILKE Heatless Curler. However, if you need to use heat, make sure to use a cream heat protectant, which ensures more coverage.

Take your time

Finally, Maria says to be patient, take time to invest in yourself and indulge in self-care, and the hair will return to a better place.

Love, SILKE xo
